About Play Therapy
Play is a child's natural language how they learn, communicate, imagine and even process real life events.
Play Therapy is a type of therapy where children communicate and process through play. This is really helpful when they cannot find the words for how they feel or for young children who can find it difficult to express themselves verbally.
The Integrative Holistic Model of Play Therapy integrates the therapeutic use of various creative arts media working with both conscious and unconscious processes through directive and non directive approaches.
Play Therapy uses a range of specifically chosen toys such as sand, music, art, puppets, role play and craft.
Play Therapy can help children with emotional regulation, self awareness and understanding their own feelings.
Some children unfortunately experience some life challenges and they can be difficult to understand and process which then plays out in their behaviour. These events might be loss, bereavement, trauma, bullying or parental separation or mental health and this could be seen as anger, anxiety, sadness, low self esteem and low confidence.
PTUK found that Play Therapy made a positive change in 77% to 84% of children.
PTUK manage the Register of Play and Creative Arts Therapists in the UK which is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
To be a Certified Play Therapist you have to complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Play Therapy and then a yearly stringent revalidation process which includes CPD and Clinical Supervision.
